Korean Beauty

 I have learned, recently more than ever before, that beauty is in the eye of the (cultural) beholder.

Some things I have learned about Korean standards of beauty:

-I thought America was obsessed with weight, but Korea is far more. For a girl, weighing above 110 pounds will apparently get you judged as fat by a large number of people. Men are hyper about their weight too.

-Small faces. For some reason, it's considered beautiful to have a tiny face there. No idea where that comes from.

-Pointy chin/v-shaped face. This is the going shape at the moment.

-Paleness. I saw someone say about a famous Korean actress that she was so pale she could almost pass as Caucasian. I think this was meant as a compliment.

-Glasses. Glasses are very, very cool in Korea, and celebrities purposely wear them in photographs.

-Cute/Aegyo. Dressing like a little girl (for girls) and in bright candy colors (for guys) is considered a desirable look.

-Double eyelids. This surgery is an extremely common graduation present for Korean teens.

-Mickey Mouse. A very famous Korean celebrity wore Mickey Mouse boardshorts on a televised program yesterday. This is not uncommon.

These are just a few of the cultural standards that I have noticed that stand out to me. I am not trying to malign or judge. If any Koreans feel that I have misrepresented your culture, please let me know and I will edit. I think the differences in beauty standards across cultures are extremely interesting. I'm glad that through all times and places, God looks at the heart.

@YouTOme -

Actually, this was meant seriously. I didn't mean any disrespect, but all of these, as funny as they may seem, are serious concepts of beauty in Korea. I didn't mean them to be tongue-in-cheek.

@Pickwick12 - oh, i know you didn't. what i meant to say was that this was enjoyable to read, but not that it was funny as in "haha". but also that if people took offense that they would hopefully understand that you didn't mean it to be judgemental, but just observant/truthful. also, just had wanted people to realize that there's nothing wrong with pointing out things we observe -- that our society is too politically correct for it's own good sometimes.

On one of my early walks around Suji, I saw this nifty-looking store down the block with music playing, all these teens hanging around out front, so I thought maybe it was a music shop or something like that.  But no . . . glasses.  Since then, I've noticed, the places that sell eyeglasses are so darn trendy, I almost wish I had vision problems so I could be cool enough to wear glasses, too.

Also, I noticed in the fashion posters at E Mart, the models were not of the multi-cultural variety.  Everyone was caucasian.

Folded, so they look American instead of Asian

Since I have middle school . . . since they're in uniforms a lot of the time, their concept of fashion is conservative and clean-cut.  Girls haircuts tend to be relatively short, straight, and having it shaped around the face seems to be a trendy look.  It's unusual for a girl to wear her hair pulled back in a ponytail holder or hair clip.
